This weeks question:

Q. What is one thing you wish you could tell your favorite author?

This is such a hard question to answer for the mere fact I have SO many favorite authors. They all have meant different things to me, and even authors I wouldn’t necessarily claim as “favorites” their books have touched me in one way or another.

I think I would more like to write to all of them:

Thank you for giving me worlds to escape into. For giving me experiences I could have had no other way but through the beauty or horror of your words. Thank you for giving me insights into this universal human experience we all share – and yet feel in a thousand different ways. Thank you for putting into words thoughts and feelings I’ve had in ways I never could myself. Thank you for making me laugh, for inspiring me, for making me angry, for pushing my boundaries and expanding the mind I consider open enough but apparently can still open further, for showing me there is never just two sides of any story there are probably at least three and one more, and for teaching me about myself.

Thank you for sharing your talent, the voices in your head, with me and the rest of us readers. We love hearing them and entering the world’s where they live and breathe and become our friends and our enemies.

Thank you.

Most Sincerely,

April, one of many readers

Follow Friday (22) Book Genres I Avoid

This weeks question:

Q. Which book genre do you avoid at all costs and why?

Over the years my tastes have broadened a lot. I used to only read mystery/thrillers/suspense – and nothing else. Seriously, was I narrow-minded or what.. Now I read so many more genres and basically everything that sounds good – although I see patterns: I don’t read hardcore science fiction (I mainly stick to dystopians when it comes to sci-fi) and I’ve never picked up a western (nor do I think I ever will..) I also have never read a book in the erotica genre, but I’ve read books that had a good amount of sex in them (hello Fever series).. so make of that what you will :D

I avoid hardcore sci-fi because all the jargon really throws off my reading flow. I just get so caught up in ti that I can’t focus on the plot and end up getting frustrated. (which thinking about it..makes me look like I’m a stupid person LOL)

I avoid westerns because.. their westerns.. haha I really just don’t like that whole “cowboy” thing.. guys in Stetson hats and jeans with big belt buckles totally don’t do it for me..

And I avoid erotica because from what I’ve observed a lot of it doesn’t have a plot, it’s just sex and I want to read books with real and interesting plots.

This weeks question:

Q. What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done for a book?

Have I said before I can be rather boring? I definitely can, especially when it comes to things like this. I’ve done like ZERO crazy things. When it comes to acquiring books I’m way to sensible and practical for my own good. LOL For instance, even when I was in the throes of the Harry Potter craze/frenzy did I ever go to a Harry Potter midnight release party? Nope. Like my dad, I’m not a huge fan of crowds. Or lines. So each time a book would come out we’d get up that morning and head over to Sam’s Club or Costco (whichever was closer at the time) and we’d grab a copy off one of the huge crates they’d have – which were also nearly half the price of the books at the bookstore.. so that’s really me right there – cheap and easy. Wow.. I can make anything sound dirty can’t I? :X

This weeks question:

Q. Go count the number of unread books sitting on your shelf. How many?

Wow, this is actually really hard. I have many “shelves” – I’m sure we all do, especially in this day and age of ereaders where we have virtual shelves. I’ve got a ton of unread books on my virtual shelves, probably more than I’d like to admit..hehe.. But I’m actually nerdy to keep a spreadsheet of all my to-read books, yeah you read that right, I have spreadsheet! Although it’s not entirely accurate at the moment because I haven’t added the ebooks I got as gifts and bought for myself over the holidays :D

So looking at my spreadsheet I have 47 physical books (assuming it’s up to date..) and 105 ebooks – which I know the ebook tally is wrong since I haven’t updated that yet. People walk into my room and immediately call it a library – I say “I’m not too bad!” :D

I should also mention I actually only have a very small area that could legitimately be called a “shelf” most of my physical books are stacked on a bench underneath my TV because my “shelf” is already stacked with books two high and there’s no room! haha

This weeks question:

Q. When you’ve read a book, what do you do with it? (Keep it, give it away, donate it, sell it, swap it..?)

It depends on what format my book is in on what I do with it after reading, so let’s assume it’s a print copy. I love to finish a great book and then share it with whoever I can. People come to me all the time when they need something to read and I’m more than happy to be their supplier! :D I love spreading the book love, and creating new fans for the books and authors I love. Sometimes I give it away permanently if it’s not a book I’m going to want to lend to people, or it’s already been lent out a lot. I’ve sold a few books, but mostly college textbooks haha. I did donate a bunch of books when we moved and I’d had a lot of books I knew I was not going to have room for and had grown out of. Mostly, I like to know my books are going to bring someone else joy and go with that. For a couple years I was really active on BookCrossing, which is a really cool thing to get into, and share book love that way!
