The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa

In a future world, vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.
Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.
Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die…or become one of the monsters.
Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.
Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.
But it isn’t easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.

The Immortal Rules is a book that I’ve been looking forward to reading ever since I first heard about it. I haven’t read Julie Kagawa’s Iron Fey series so I was very interested to begin one of her series fresh – and it’s always interesting to read another author’s take on vampires.

The book begins with Allison and her gang of friends in the Fringe, doing their best to stay alive at all odds. It’s a tough world with vampires in control and since Allison and her crew don’t want to be “pets” to the vamps, they have to live by their brawn and wits. I think the thing I was disappointed with was not really getting enough time to care for her crew. I was discussing Immortal Rules with the Geeks Who Read Book Club and a lot of us agreed that it’d be awesome for there to be a prequel about how the vamps ended up taking over, etc.

I thought it was fascinating from a psychological aspect to see Allie in a position where she’s forced to become something she’s loathed all her life – and yet she chooses that instead of death. It made me wonder what I would choose, if I had a choice to either become something I hated and feared or die. I still don’t know the answer to that, but I think most of me in that moment would want to LIVE too.

I started to really enjoy the book when Allie has time with her mentor/maker, Kanin. Although, I have to say I thought of him constantly as “Bunny” because Bex told me kanin in Swedish is “bunny” and that she couldn’t stop laughing when she saw his name – so I blame her for getting that stuck in my head! I’m hoping that in the next book we learn more about Kanin and that he makes reappearance for a much longer time – which I have a hunch he will based on how this Immortal Rules ended. ;)

I thought the suspense was great for most of the book. The entire time Allie was with Zeke’s group I kept on going through scenarios and clues in my head trying to figure out what was going to happen. I like when a book can keep me guessing – and I never guess right! So on that front, Immortal Rules is a definite win!

Zeke is my favorite character. I loved how much he loved everyone else and was so selfless. I am crossing my fingers, toes, and legs that Zeke gets to reappear in the second book! I hope that Zeke and Allie can work it out and be together. *cue the awwwws*

The Immortal Rules is definitely a great read for any vamp lover. I liked learning about how this vamp society was set up and Allie is a fun character to follow. She’s had to make some tough choices but I think she’s done very well for herself! I’m going to be looking forward to reading the second book in the series for sure!

Switched by Amanda Hocking

When Wendy Everly was six years old, her mother was convinced she was a monster and tried to kill her. Eleven years later, Wendy discovers her mother might have been right.  She’s not the person she’s always believed herself to be, and her whole life begins to unravel—all because of Finn Holmes.

Finn is a mysterious guy who always seems to be watching her.  Every encounter leaves her deeply shaken…though it has more to do with her fierce attraction to him than she’d ever admit.  But it isn’t long before he reveals the truth:  Wendy is a changeling who was switched at birth—and he’s come to take her home.

Now Wendy’s about to journey to a magical world she never knew existed, one that’s both beautiful and frightening.  And where she must leave her old life behind to discover who she’s meant to become…

I’ve been waiting to read Switched for quite some time. I actually downloaded the Trylle trilogy back when it was self-published and still have it on my nook. I just never found the time to read them! So when I won a copy of Switched, with its beautiful new cover, I was stoked! Now I had an excuse to pick up the book I’d been hearing so much about for so long.

This might come as a surprise to most people but this is the first book I’ve read that has to do with the idea of changelings. I’m sort of shocked myself, but I can’t remember any! I was super intrigued with the idea and the purpose that Hocking gave them for the Trylle – it wasn’t one I expected!

This brings me to the Trylle, definitely an interesting twist on trolls! I had no idea before reading Switched that it was about trolls! (I try not to read any reviews for books I’m going to be reading, or want to read. Yeah I’m that paranoid about spoilers.) I’m so intrigued by them and the things I learned, for instance that each is born with certain gifts/powers.
There are many elements that are pretty standard for YA right now. But what sold me on the book were the characters. I already really like them and I have a feeling I’m going to eventually fall in love with them as the trilogy continues.

I love that Wendy behaved how I expected someone to behave when they found out their life as they knew it was based on a lie. She remained loyal to the family who raised her as their own. I love Wendy’s spunk (which is high on my list of likeable personality traits for characters.)

I think the only reason I’m giving Switched 4 stars instead of 5, is that there is a certain element of insta-love. It’s not QUITE instant, but enough to make me go “yeah right..” I couldn’t buy that part of the story but it didn’t ruin it for me. I was so captivated with the overall plot and the interesting world Hocking has created to focus too much on it.

The ending totally made me gasp, I had no idea THAT was coming, very unexpected and I’m definitely intrigued and wondering what will happen in the next installment of the Trylle trilogy, which lucky for us is coming out in February 2012!

If you’re a fan of Peter Pan, fairy tales or magical worlds – this is a trilogy you’ll want to check out Switched, the first installment of the Trylle trilogy.

Book Review: The Girl in the Steel Corset by Kady Cross

Book Review: The Girl in the Steel Corset by Kady Cross

The Girl in the Steel Corset (Steampunk Chronicles, #1)The Girl in the Steel Corset by Kady Cross

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In The Girl in the Steel Corset, Finley Jayne is not your average Victorian-era heroine. She has a dark side. Employed as a maid when Lord August-Raynes makes untoward advances, her dark side comes forward and she flees from the aftermath, knowing she will be fired. As she’s running from the scene of the incident, she steps into the path of Griffin King’s velocycle and he crashes to avoid hitting her. Griffin and his friend end up taking Finley back to his house in order to ensure she’s alright. He’s also curious because he senses that there is something different about Finley and hopes to discover what it is.

As Finley comes around she soon realizes that this is no ordinary household and perhaps they are as unique as she is. Never having any friends before she is wary and trust isn’t easy for her. However, Finley soon becomes aware of a mystery that Griffin and his friends are desperate to solve. A man known as The Machinist – because he uses automatons to commit his crimes – is on the loose and Finley is hoping she can earn the trust and friendship she’s gone so long without, by helping them stop him before he destroys all of England.

First off, a shelf confession: The Girl in the Steel Corset is only the second steampunk book I’ve ever read, the first being a classic of the genre, Infernal Devices by K.W. Jeter. I really loved this book and how the world is slowly revealed to the reader – the beautiful meld of old and new that is the hallmark of steampunk.

My favorite part of The Girl in the Steel Corset was the interactions between the characters. Griffin is the leader of the group, and the owner of the house and he’s “collected” all of these unique people. They all have interesting strengths and weaknesses. Emily is in love with Sam, but Sam has no clue. Finley has trouble trying to blend both sides of herself into one coherent self, so she is sometimes unpredictable. Griffin feels a huge amount of responsibility for the well-being of his friends and he’s torn between his allegiances to all of them as he welcomes Finley into his home.

I also liked the villain. The Machinist is creepy and you only learn bits and pieces about him – as much as the characters know, before the final scenes play out. It makes for some great suspense.

The only thing I wasn’t quite sure about was the ending. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t read it, but it left me only partially satisfied.

I highly recommend The Girl in the Steel Corset for all steampunk lovers – or anyone who is curious to try the steampunk genre. Also, for anyone interested in mystery or romance, there’s enough in the book to keep you satisfied as well.

Book Review: Cameo the Assassin by Dawn McCullough-White

Book Review: Cameo the Assassin by Dawn McCullough-White

Cameo the AssassinCameo the Assassin by Dawn McCullough-White

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Cameo the Assassin opens with a heart-rending scene; a woman is lying in a field after a brutal attack that left her little sister dead, she herself clinging to life. As she’s lying there in her own thoughts, a man comes and bites her, and suddenly she finds the strength to flee.

Several years later Cameo, a well-known assassin with a group known as the Associates, is given an assignment: to kill Leon Belfour, Prince of Sieunes, and heir to the throne. On her way to do the dirty deed

Cameo’s coach is robbed by two highwaymen. Through a series of events Cameo and the highwaymen find their fates intertwined, especially after they find themselves wanted for the Prince’s murder. The suspense builds as Cameo’s past comes to light and the group finds themselves on the run for their lives, and from a force not as easily escapable as the authorities or assassins.

Confession:

I really fell in love with Cameo the Assassin. I have to admit, I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I had no idea the paranormal elements the story had, and the twists it would take. I LOVED the characters; I cannot even describe how much I LOVED the characters. The highwaymen and Cameo, they make a group of misfits that left me in fits of laughter at times! Especially Black Opal, with his penchant for fine clothes, wearing make-up, his shameless flirting and witty banter left me smiling. Cameo is tough as nails, kick’n butt and takin’ names, and yet she has a soft side too that comes through.

I am so excited to read the next book in the series, Cameo and the Highwayman!

I’m also excited to announce we have a special feature upcoming, an interview between the author and her 2 main characters! So watch for that, I’ll be posting it in the next few days!
