Review: Scarlet (Lunar Chronicles #2) by Marissa Meyer

Pabkin’s One Liner: A stolen ship with a saucy captain, street fighting, train jumping, and romance – how much better can it get?

Cinder returns in the second thrilling installment of the New York Times-bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She’s trying to break out of prison—even though if she succeeds, she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother and the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she has no choice but to trust him, though he clearly has a few dark secrets of his own.

As Scarlet and Wolf work to unravel one mystery, they find another when they cross paths with Cinder. Together, they must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen who will do anything to make Prince Kai her husband, her king, her prisoner.

I can’t recommend this series enough! If you haven’t already you need to pick up the first book in the Lunar Chronicles, Cinder! This second book Scarlet was fan-freaking-tastic. I can’t decide if I love it more than the first but regardless they were both great! Meyer has a wonderful gift for storytelling. She draws you in with her fabulously realized characters, even her minor characters have unique voices all their own. The world she has created is so unique and yet so eerily our own, that I can really picture this being how things end up on our planet.  I especially love Iko, the android with a real personality…she is so lovable.

Now for the new characters!  – I know most of us don’t like the addition of new characters because you can’t wait to get back to the ones you originally started with but these ones were a great addition! I found myself liking them right away. The Captain that isn’t a Captain, well he just really grows on you even though you want to smack him from time to time.  I think of him as comedy relief.

Originally I thought that the second book would continue to follow Cinder, as that was a retelling of the classic Cinderella.  But I didn’t mind at all when we were introduced to Scarlet, Meyer’s version of Little Red Riding Hood. I connected with her a lot and SPOILER! – I couldn’t help falling for Wolf right along with her.

Wolf was definitely my favorite character. I love his shy demeanor and the way he doesn’t know what the simplest things are. But a wolf is still a wolf and wolves will always be….dangerous. *cackles madly*

I’m tormented that I have to wait at least another year for the next installment. I’m so curious as to whether it will include another classic fairy tale retelling!  *cracks the whip* Keep it coming Marissa Meyer!

    1. LOVED Scarlet!!!!! And I loved that about Wolf too: he was shy, sweet and bad ass at the same time! Gosh.. I hate waiting for a year!

    2. Glad to see someone else in love with Wolf…thus leaving Kai to me! I thought this book was so fantastic, raising the bar very high for the rest of the series!

      • You can totally have Kai – he has way too much responsibility for me…so you are NEVER really going to get him all to yourself girl…you would have to share him with a country! *evil laughter* Plus…bad boys are better….*ahem* in other areas…that animalistic charm!

    3. I LOVE THIS BOOK *fangirls*

Alright, I’m trying to stay calm, but I flew through this book. Scarlet is such an amazing character and I love Wolf and Thorne! I was so happy to see Cinder again :D This book was just, ahhh, perfection :) Great review!

      Now the horror.
      Next book, 2014.

      • Yes, I’m a nutso fan girl for her also!
But just imagine if it was like 5 years between books like George R.R. Martin, Song of Ice and Fire books (Game of Thrones). His last three books each had five to six years between the next release.

    4. I can not wait to read this one…it sounds so awesome! Great review!

    5. I’ve been wanting to start on the Lunar Chronicles myself. Everyone has been raving about “Cinder” and “Scarlet”, so my curiosity is REALLY piqued! Your funny review has convinced me that I simply MUST get “Scarlet”. And of course I’ve got to start with the first book. So thanks for your thoughts on this one!

Also, thanks for dropping by and commenting on my “Waiting On Wednesday” post earlier in the week! :)

    6. I can’t wait to read Scarlet! Thanks for the truthful review :)

    7. I really enjoyed Cinder so I have been eager to get hold of Scarlet! I’m not a huge fan when we are introduced to new characters but I must admit you have me curious about Wolf – does the story still focus on Cinder/Kai? or is our MC now Scarlet? I’m curious to see how this all comes together.

    8. Super fantastic awesome book! I loved Cinder and have been looking forward to Scarlet for soooo long! Marissa Meyer has done a fabulous job reinventing these classic fairy tales! And she’s super sweet too, Pabkins and I waited in line for hours at her book signing release of Cinder in her home town in WA. Moving around a lot has to have some perks! :)
