Your Fate in Fiction: Monsters & Eurovision

To Be or Not To Be a Grim Reaper

Your Fate in Fiction Feature

Welcome to Bex @ Kindle Fever and I’s blog feature: Your Fate in Fiction. Every other week we will be posing a question inspired by a book. We invite others to join in the fun – answer the question in the comments or make a blog post of your own and link it in the comments so we can visit!

This post was inspired by The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa. It’s an awesome addition to the world of vampire books so I highly recommend it! I just finished reading it last night, and so my review will be coming shortly!

When faced with the choice of either an immediate death or to continue living as something that, in your eyes, is a monster… what do you think you would do?

First, I have to say that since The Immortal Rules is about vampires I never really consider them monsters. I’m a huge fan! I just can’t see them as “evil” or even “soulless.” I think there is a place for them in the fictional world, even if sometimes they feel they don’t belong or humans feel they don’t belong. OK I’m getting all sappy here. So I’ll have to choose something other than a vampire to consider becoming… I think anything that doesn’t have a mind of it’s own and can’t overcome it’s baser instincts is a monster. For example rabids, they are so caught up in their own frenzy for food and whatever else they are craving that they don’t care what damage they inflict as long as it gets them what they want. Same thing for zombies, they don’t have brains [ever think how funny it is that they don't have brains and yet crave brains for food.. there is some deep seated psych lesson there I think.]

So, to answer the question! Would I choose immediate death over becoming a rabid or a zombie? I think I would choose death. As scary as the unknown is, I’d rather go the way of natural things then become something that is going to do nothing but hurt other people and things.

So what about you?

OK, now I have to blame Bex for totally getting me addicted to Eurovision last year. Until last year I didn’t even know Eurovision EXISTED. I’m an American, LOL. Being a huge fan of music, and the absurd, and getting to experience live events with Bex who lives halfway across the world – I could not resist. The skype convos we have are downright hilarious LOL [they are most of the time, but for Eurovision they are even more funny as we analyze contestants and songs]

Last year we rooted for Eric Saade but he wasn’t quite Popular enough to win [since I'm American, the week of Euro I become a de facto Swede, its just how I roll *giggle*] this year we’re rooting for Loreen who we’re stoked made it into the final and is one of the ones who is  definitely in the running to win – lots of people talking about her! And she’s awesome – as you can see HERE.

Last year Bex and I also became Jedheads.. for those of you not familiar with that term, it means we’re fans of JEDWARD! A twin team that competes for Ireland – and seriously, the most hyperactive, happy, bouncy, cartwheeling dudes you’ll ever meet. You can’t help but be happy when you see them! Bex and I may even have made special pics of us wearing JEDWARD hair [mine is on my twitter account LOL] SO even though we’re rooting for Loreen, we’re happy that JEDWARD is back this year for more fun! You can see them in all their hilarity HERE. And one more video featuring JEDWARD that I can’t stop watching – them with Vanilla Ice singing Pressure: HERE.

There is SO much I could say about Eurovision. Seriously, Bex and I have been looking forward to this since the end of last years LOL [If you haven't figured it out we're complete dorks/nerds when it comes to Eurovision]

So there you have it! Would you choose to die or become a monster – and what about Eurovision, who are you rooting for? Or are you a Eurovision newb who needs to be infected?! We can help either way: watch the final LIVE stream HERE.

GO LOREEN!

The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa

In a future world, vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die…or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn’t easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.

The Girl in the Clockwork Collar by Kady Cross

What happens when someone you love becomes a weapon to use against you…

In New York City, 1897, life has never been more thrilling — or dangerous.

Sixteen-year-old Finley Jayne and her “straynge band of mysfits” have journeyed from London to America to rescue their friend Jasper, hauled off by bounty hunters. But Jasper is in the clutches of a devious former friend demanding a trade—the dangerous device Jasper stole from him…for the life of the girl Jasper loves.

One false move from Jasper and the strange clockwork collar around Mei’s neck tightens. And tightens.
From the rough streets of lower Manhattan to elegant Fifth Avenue, the motley crew of teens with supernatural abilities is on Jasper’s elusive trail. And they’re about to discover how far they’ll go for friendship.

More than ever, Finley Jayne will rely on powerful English duke Griffin King to balance her dark magic with her good side. Yet Griffin is at war with himself over his secret attraction to Finley…and will risk his life and reputation to save her. Sam, more machine than man, finds his moody heart tested by Irish lass Emily—whose own special abilities are no match for the darkness she discovers on the streets.

Now, to help those she’s come to care for so deeply, Finley Jayne must infiltrate a criminal gang. Only problem is, she might like the dark side a little too much….

The GIrl in the Clockwork Collar quote

I love this quote from Griffen’s mind because it’s SO true; I think we’ve all felt that way a time or two. For some reason [as odd as it is] this quote made me think of Citizen Kane’s song Better Days because there are just days when everything is just going bad and we know everyone we meet is going to be nothing but trouble!

In New York City, 1897, life has never been more thrilling – or dangerous.

Sixteen-year-old Finley Jayne and her “straynge band of mysfits” have journeyed from London to America to rescue their friend Jasper, hauled off by bounty hunters. But Jasper is in the clutches of a devious former friend demanding a trade-the dangerous device Jasper stole from him…for the life of the girl Jasper loves.

The Girl in the Clockwork Collar is the second book in the Steampunk Chronicles series featuring Finley Jayne and her gang of misfit friends. This time Finley and friends are headed to New York to help their friend Jasper who was hauled off on murder charges.

Finley’s two sides of her personality may have merged but she’s struggling with which part of her personality becomes dominant – her feisty fun-loving side – or the side that craves danger and living on the wild side skirting the law.

I really enjoyed The Girl in the Clockwork Collar; I never knew what was coming and I enjoyed the new characters that we are introduced to. This time we’re dealing with the gangs of New York and people from Jasper’s past. Finley going undercover and infiltrating Dalton’s gang was quite fun and provided great tension.

I think one of my favorite characters was Wildecat; even though she doesn’t play a huge role in Clockwork Collar I loved her spunk and found her fascinating. I hope my hunch proves correct and that we’ll be seeing more of her.

I really loved that friendships and bonds are strengthened in The Girl in the Clockwork Collar. Finley and Sam are no longer at each other’s throats, Sam and Emily are closer than ever, and Finley and Emily are becoming thick as thieves. The sparks between Griffen and Finley burn a little brighter as the intensity of their feelings for each other become even more obvious. In short, Finley is no longer seen as an interloper out to use Griffen but is definitely one of their own now.

For fans of The Girl in the Steel Corset, Cross doesn’t disappoint. We get the feisty Finley, the brawls, the wit and the charm, the steampunk punkery. This time around we also get Tesla and his crazy inventions!

The only reason why this isn’t a 5 star review is because I was a little disappointed that the clockwork collar that the book is named for did not feature more prominently in the book. It’s not like it WASN’T mentioned, but I just expected more from it I guess. This was a very small complaint however and did not really hinder my enjoyment of the book much at all. Still totally in love with these books and Finley is fast becoming one of my favorite heroines who can kick ass and take names.

I can’t wait to see where else Cross decides to take us with these books and characters. I know for sure I’ll be buying my ticket for the next dirigible ride.

Waiting on Wednesday (6) The Other Normals by Ned Vizzini

Waiting on Wednesday (6) The Other Normals by Ned Vizzini

Waiting on Wednesday

hosted by Breaking the Spine

The Other Normals by Ned Vizinni is what I am eagerly anticipating this Wednesday! I stumbled on this on my many Amazon searches and it just sounds SO fantastic. It sounds geektastic! I also love books that bring the hero in the “everyday” person – those people you wouldn’t expect it from. I can’t wait to get my nerd on reading this one! :D

The Other Normals by Ned Vizzini

Given the chance, fifteen-year-old Peregrine “Perry” Eckert would dedicate every waking moment to Creatures & Caverns, an epic role-playing game rich with magical creatures, spell casting, and deadly weapons. The world of C&C is where he feels most comfortable in his own skin, so when his parents ship him off to summer camp Perry is sure he’s in for the worst summer of his life.

Everything changes, however, when Perry gets to camp and stumbles into the World of the Other Normals. Perry’s new otherworldly friends need his help to save their princess and prevent mass violence. As they embark on their quest together, Perry realizes that his nerdy childhood has uniquely prepared him to be a great warrior in this world, and maybe even a hero.

Bestselling author Ned Vizzini delivers a compulsively readable and wildly original story about the winding and often hilarious path to manhood.
