Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.
My teaser this week comes from Switched by Amanda Hocking and I’m really loving it!

Switched (Trylle Trilogy 1)

“What kind of child are you, Wendy?”She slowly walked around the island, coming toward me. The knife in her hand looked far more menacing than it had a few seconds ago.
“You’re certainly not my child. What are you, Wendy?”

- pg. 4 Switched(Trylle Trilogy #1) by Amanda Hocking

Why I’m Not Jumping on the G+ Bandwagon

I know that a lot of people are confused about the new changes, with GFC  going away for non-blogger blogs –and also the fear it could be going away for Blogger blogs in the future. It’s understandable – GFC has been a tremendously convenient way to follow blogs, and even more so for bloggers to keep track of WHO is following them.

Now Google made the suggestion that blogs should create G+ pages for their blogs in lieu of GFC. G+ pages are basically like Facebook Fan pages. I already have a Facebook Fan page and a personal G+ profile. So, even though I do have a personal G+ profile, I don’t really want followers to follow me on G+ as a way to keep up with my blog because frankly, I have enough social networks I’m active on (FB, Twitter) and I don’t  need another one.

But really, there’s a larger reason why I won’t be using G+ in lieu of GFC, it’s because the two do NOT serve the same function. In other words: G+ does not = GFC. Google of course, wants us to run to G+ because that is part of their plan in shutting down services that aren’t “popular” – they want G+ to take off like Facebook.

Think about the feed reader (usually Google Reader but there are others) –when a follower goes there, they are looking specifically to read their blogs. Now think about G+, everyone can share anything they like. Do you want your blog post lost in the shuffle between that funny new youtube video everyone is passing around, or would you rather know that your follower is ready to read blogs and at least your posts will be among others of its kind? I know what the answer is for me. I want my posts in a reader not lost among various other posts of all kinds.

When a follower follows via GFC, all it means is that you’re subscribing to a feed for that blog that goes into your Google Reader. If you click on my Google Reader button it allows you to subscribe the same way –actually more directly, since you’re not going through GFC.

I know that RSS is scary –or maybe not so much scary as people being unwilling to try it because it’s different. RSS is actually very simple. You click on the RSS button and up pops a page where you can choose what Reader you prefer (because I’m subscribed to Feedburner) –and GoogleReader is there, so if that’s what you prefer, click that OR if you already know you want Google Reader click my Google Reader button.

I’m going to be removing my G+ button because I want people to follow my blog in the places where I’m present –and right now G+ doesn’t even have a way for non-Blogger blogs to automatically upload blog posts like I can with my FB Fan page – so it’s almost pointless for people to follow my personal page if you’re interested in my blog posts.

Of course, this is just my opinion. I welcome all thoughts and opinions on this.

Tour: Iron Knight by Julie Kagawa

Tour: Iron Knight by Julie Kagawa

Iron Knight Tour Featuring Julie Kagawa

I am pleased to welcome Julie Kagawa to My Shelf Confessions as a stop on the Official Blog Tour; she’s been kind enough to answer a few questions! As I’m sure all of you know, her new book Iron Knight is out, it’s the latest in the Iron Fey series.

Interview

Did you always know you’d be writing a spin off series and can we expect to hear more of Meghan, Ash and Puck’s story in the future?

Actually, I was approached by my publisher when The Iron Fey series was wrapping up and asked if I had any more Iron Fey stories floating around my head.  Which got me thinking of Ethan, Meghan’s little brother.  He was the one who started the whole adventure, in a way.  What would it be like growing up, able to see the fey?  And the more I thought about it, the more I realized Ethan had a story to tell, too.  As for Ash, Meghan, and Puck, I’m sure there will be a few cameos in the new series. ;-)

Do you recall when your interest in writing originated?

Around high school, I believe.  I didn’t always want to be a writer; when I was younger I wanted to be a veterinarian.  Until I realized the amount of math and science that was required, which dampened my enthusiasm a bit.  But I always enjoyed writing, so I thought I would give that a try.  I had this ridiculous idea that I could write and publish a novel before I went to college, and then I’d be set.  Yeah, it didn’t exactly happen that way, lol.

What is your ideal writing environment? Do you prefer music or solitude? Is there a time of day (or night) that you prefer?

I would love to be one of those writers who can go to a coffee shop or a bookstore and write with a steaming mug of tea beside me.  Sadly, I’m so easily distracted that I can’t concentrate if there’s anything interesting going on around me.  So I’m usually confined to my office, though I do like listening to music as I write.

Where did you come up with the idea for the Iron Fey series?

Faeries, the old, ancient fey, not the glittery winged sprites, have always fascinated me. But I wanted to write a book that was different than other faery books. So I began thinking: what are the fey afraid of? The answer, in most ancient mythos, is iron. Faeries can’t stand the touch of iron and steel. So, what if there was a new type of fey that had evolved with progress over the years? What if they weren’t only immune to iron, their existence was slowly poisoning and corrupting the lands of the traditional fey? And I realized we already have “monsters” in machines: gremlins, bugs, viruses, ect. And from that thought, the Iron fey were born.

My name—my True Name—is Ashallayn’ darkmyr Tallyn. I am the last remaining son of Mab, Queen of the Unseelie Court. And I am dead to her. My fall began, as many stories do, with a girl…

To cold faery prince Ash, love was a weakness for mortals and fools. His own love had died a horrible death, killing any gentler feelings the Winter prince might have had. Or so he thought.

Then Meghan Chase—a half human, half fey slip of a girl—smashed through his barricades, binding him to her irrevocably with his oath to be her knight. And when all of Faery nearly fell to the Iron fey, she severed their bond to save his life. Meghan is now the Iron Queen, ruler of a realm where no Winter or Summer fey can survive.

With the unwelcome company of his archrival, Summer Court prankster Puck, and the infuriating cait sith Grimalkin, Ash begins a journey he is bound to see through to its end—a quest to find a way to honor his vow to stand by Meghan’s side.

To survive in the Iron Realm, Ash must have a soul and a mortal body. But the tests he must face to earn these things are impossible. And along the way Ash learns something that changes everything. A truth that challenges his darkest beliefs and shows him that, sometimes, it takes more than courage to make the ultimate sacrifice.

This weeks question:

Q.It’s Thanksgiving Day in the U.S. so we want to know what you are Thankful for – blogging related of course! Who has helped you out along the way? What books are you thankful for reading?

Wow, this post could go on forever! I’m thankful for so many people in the blogosphere, for so many friends, books, it goes on and on!

Let’s go with people first: I’m thankful for my Skype Sisters! We all connected during this years Book Bloggers & Publishers Online Conference (BBPCON) and decided to keep in touch through Skype after. After awhile our “group” honed down to a few regulars (8 of us including me) and we’ve talked pretty much every day on Skype ever since! It’s been amazing to have so many opinions – and we don’t always agree – but we each have different blogs and it’s been so much fun to see each other grow, since so many of us started blogging around the same time. I can’t imagine NOT talking to them anymore, it’d be so weird! AS a group we also have our besties (only natural for some to gravitate more towards each other than others) so I have to give a special shout out to my partner in crime and also my “co-blogger” who watches my site like a hawk, even more than I do sometimes: Bex @ Kindle Fever and I also can’t forget Jenn from The Bawdy Book Blog who was there even before I met the others and who REALLY forced me to make my dream a reality when she took my idea to create a book blog and did it herself before I did and then MADE sure I followed through to make mine! I don’t know if my blog would be where it is without either of these two fabulous people. Not even to mention the friendship we have, which is an amazing blessing.

As for books, I really think I will have to leave that for separate post, I have so many and this is a HOP after all :D

I do have one important matter to discuss – a lot of you probably already know that GFC is no longer a viable way to follow people since it’s being shut down for non-blogger blogs (like this one) – so please , even if you’ve followed through GFC take the time to subscribe either through the “Follow via Google Reader” button or through the “Follow through RSS” button – or the many other various ways, including Email subscription, or Networkedblog! I’m sorry for the inconvenience but really appreciate you taking the time do this.

Happy Friday People!

IMPORTANT: Letter to All Followers Regarding GFC

Dear Followers,

I’m writing a special post to all of you because it’s come to my attention that the most popular way to follow my blog (and many blogs) the Google Friend Connect widget is no longer going to be a viable option beginning March 2012. According to Google, Friend Connect is not a popular enough service to keep going and so beginning March 2012 they will be closing it down except to blogger blogs (and who knows how long they will keep it open for blogger).

I hate change for the most part. I cannot fathom why Google feels like Friend Connect is not popular, it seems to be on almost every blog I go to; but there’s nothing to do but get past the frustration and move on.

So from now on the best ways to follow me are:

  • RSS Feed (this option allows you to choose the reader of your choice)
  • NetworkedBlogs – Following this way means my posts will go into NB’s reader on FB
  • Facebook Fan Page – by Liking my fan page you will have access to my posts (since my posts automatically go to my Fan page, this will not be as convenient for you though since you may have to search the page out, especially if you have many pages you Like)

In my opinion, the best ways to follow are  either Follow via Google ReaderRSS Feed or Email; NetworkedBlogs is also a good way, the Fan page is handy but probably not the best way to keep up to date with what’s going on.

Please note, even if you already follow via GFC, you most likely WILL NOT receive posts after March 2012 unless you follow another way.

I really hope you all choose to continue following me, I wish this wasn’t a change that had to be made, but Google has left us no choice. I am more thankful than ever that I’ve left blogger for WordPress.

I know that March is a few months away, but I wanted to let all of my followers know before the deadline came so that there is time to make the change and get the word out. I thank all of you for your support, it has meant so much to me as a new blogger this year.

I hope you all will continue to follow me as I make my way into the future and all that it holds for all of us! Thank you so much for your patience as we work through is! :)

All best,

April @ My Shelf Confessions
