Follow Friday
This is a weeky meme hosted by the ever awesome Parajunkee and Alison.
This weeks question:

Q. What book that hasn’t been turned into a movie (yet) would you most like to see make it to the big screen, and who would you like cast as your favorite character?

This is a really hard one! I would LOVE to see Dominance by Will Lavender and the Professor Richard Aldiss would be played by Kevin Spacey. I can TOTALLY picture this. By the way, if you haven’t read the book – it’s freaking AMAZINGTASTIC! One of my all time favs for this year!!

Today I’m also participating in a fun new meme called Top Spot in which you post your favorite book of the month and link up so that other people can hop around and see what books everyone loves!

Where You Write Featuring Helen Smith

Helen Smith workspace

I have an office at home but I recently moved into the kitchen to write because there’s more natural light and I can see the garden from two windows, whereas I only have one in my office. When summer is over, I may move back again. I’m very happy writing there but it would be nice to sit and write by the ocean.

Where You Write MadeiraView from my window of the hotel room

At the beginning of the year I went to Madeira for a few days to write a mystery story, THREE SISTERS. Every day I got up early, swam in the hotel pool, went back to my room and wrote, went for another swim, wrote some more, went for another swim and then had a simple dinner of locally-caught fish with a glass of wine. I liked the combination of fresh air, exercise, sunshine, tranquility and work. I’d like to do the same thing again this winter: it’s lovely to get away when it’s dark, cold and miserable here in England.

Mini Interview

Do you listen to music while you write? If so, any particular artist or band?

I listen to the radio but I don’t really hear it when I’m working, it’s just a background noise. Unfortunately I can’t listen to BBC Radio 4 – which is a station that broadcasts plays, stories, news and commentary – because I find it intrusive, so I tune into an easy-listening station.

When you finish that final draft, what’s the 1st, 2nd and 3rd thing you do?

First of all, I dance in my kitchen. Then I ask my daughter and her father to read it and tell me what they think. Then I send it to my agent.

What’s the oddest thing you’ve ever had to research or look up for your writing?

I put a picture of the Cerne Abbas Giant into the manuscript for my novel, ALISON WONDERLAND. He’s a strange-looking fellow – you can Google him if you’re not easily shocked!

What are a few of your favorite blogs?

I love How to Be a Retronaut, Cake Wrecks, Spitalfields Life, Awesome People Hanging Out Together and Letters of Note.
I also read lots and lots of book blogs and blogs by other writers.

Banned Books Blog Hop Giveaway

Banned Books Blog Hop Giveaway

Banned Book HopHosted by I Am a Reader & I Read Banned Books

My Opinion on Banned Books

There are so many great books that are banned in various places around the country and the world. It’s extremely hard to choose just ONE to give away. I ultimately decided to give away a copy of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury because it’s one of the books that really touched me when I read it, in a suprising and visceral way. I could very easily picture the world that Bradbury describes.

I decided on Fahrenheit 451 for another reason as well, I think it’s incredibly ironic that a book ABOUT banning books (among other things) would be in itself banned.

My opinion on banning books? I don’t think it’s productive or beneficial to society. Every person has their own opinions and their own set of values and judgements and all the other things that go into making us INDIVIDUAL people. When we decide as a whole (or in part) that some books are not fit for society, we are exposing our own beliefs and trying to ensure others believe the same. When we ban books (especially from school libraries) we’re basically saying we don’t have faith in children to form their own opinions and to ask questions. We’re also sending the message that we don’t have faith in the people in these children’s lives either, to help them understand things in context, to teach right from wrong, to learn how to think critically but also ask questions.

However, I do think that some books shouldn’t be readily available for children at a young age, For instance, I don’t think the Kama Sutra belongs in school libraries, even though it’s a classic and very well known. Some books are just not appropriate for all ages. The tricky part is deciding what books are appropriate for what ages. I think this is where parental discretion comes into play. Parents should know their kids well enough to know what they are mentally prepared to handle and what they aren’t. I know as a reader, I was very mature for my age and was reading adult books WAY before I was even in high school. Not adult in the sense that they had adult content (although some did) but in the sense of the reading level.

I think the trickiest issues come when books that are written for certain age levels contain content that some people do not consider age appropriate – for example And Tango Makes Three, a book written for very young readers that deals with homosexuality. Here again, I think it’s a judgment call for parents. In my opinion, (and this is MY opinion) I don’t think children should have to be confronted with gender and sexual issues until they are older. IF they’re presented with something or have questions, then yes, it should be addressed and maybe a book could be brought out to help explain things. But I do believe children deserve to have as innocent a childhood as possible. I think it’s really up to parents and guardians on whether or not the issues are brought up proactively or if they are discussed as a result of an experience the child has or questions that come up.

So to recap: My Shelf Confessions is giving away one copy of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. OR  You can choose a $10 Amazon GC or equivalent at the Book Depository to buy a banned book of your choice.

This is open to INTLs, so feel free to enter! Just fill out the Rafflecopter mandatory entry (just your name and email, nothing else is required) and you’re all set. Good luck!

Beautifully Broken Sherry Soule

Thirteenth daughter. Heritage witch. Demon slayer.

They say every town has its secrets, but that doesn’t even begin to describe Whispering Pines. The townsfolk are a superstitious lot and the mystical disappearance of a local teen has everyone murmuring about a centuries old witch’s curse…

Sixteen-year-old Shiloh Ravenwolf is a heritage witch from the Broussard family, a family both destined and cursed. After she takes a summer job at Ravenhurst Manor, she discovers a ghost with an agenda. That’s where she meets the new town hottie, Trent Donovan. But Trent may be the next victim on the supernatural hit list, and Shiloh is the only person with the power to save him.

Complicated much?

After receiving cryptic messages from a creepy wraith, and then frightening threats from a demon, Shiloh finally begins to understand the mysterious significance of the strange mark branded on her wrist. Now Shiloh must decide how much she’s willing to sacrifice to protect the other teenagers in town.

Unfortunately, for Shiloh, not all ghosts want help crossing over. Some want vengeance.

Beautifully Haunted Book 2 in her Spellbound Series is being released November 31, 2011.
