Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart

 Frankie Landau-Banks at age 14:

Debate Club.
Her father’s “bunny rabbit.”
A mildly geeky girl attending a highly competitive boarding school.

Frankie Landau-Banks at age 15:
A knockout figure.
A sharp tongue.
A chip on her shoulder.
And a gorgeous new senior boyfriend: the supremely goofy, word-obsessed Matthew Livingston.

Frankie Landau-Banks.
No longer the kind of girl to take “no” for an answer.
Especially when “no” means she’s excluded from her boyfriend’s all-male secret society.
Not when her ex-boyfriend shows up in the strangest of places.
Not when she knows she’s smarter than any of them.
When she knows Matthew’s lying to her.
And when there are so many, many pranks to be done.

Frankie Landau-Banks, at age 16:
Possibly a criminal mastermind.

This is the story of how she got that way.

The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks – can I say amen? Frankie is like the anti-Bella. I loved Twilight but Bella – please find yourself outside of your relationship to Edward.  Frankie does just that – she doesn’t like the place her boyfriend has put her in, how he excludes her from the things most important to him, namely the all boys secret society that he’s a member of. She’s also annoyed at the patriarchal good ol’ boys club that the boarding school was founded on and that continues. Not one to be pushed around anymore, Frankie decides to take action.

And that’s where the fun begins.

I bought The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks on the recommendation of a friend. It took me a long time to get to it but it was WELL worth the wait.

Frankie is smart, funny and she’s kicking ass and taking names. The pranks she orchestrates are hilarious and clever. You can’t help but root for her!

I couldn’t ask more from a book – a secret society, a preppie boarding school setting (you know my love by now, right?) and a book where the heroine totally comes out on top. Not to mention humor and yes I even learned a few things. This is intelligent entertainment. There was even a secret book to be found – be still my beating heart!

Another thing I love is when the book I’m reading makes me want to read other books to learn more. Disreputable History totally made me want to learn more about the panopticon and also about some of the real college pranks Frankie’s pranks were based on. I’m grateful the author acknowledged several of her sources for further investigation for inquiring minds. Seriously though, who doesn’t want to know some of the best college pranks ever pulled?

Frankie is most definitely one of my favorite female characters of all time. This is one book I really WISH was a series or at least a trilogy. I want MORE!

Review: Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning

Review: Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning

Darkfever by Karen M. Moning

Mac is your typical Southern Bell living in Georgia. She’s spending the summer lounging by her pool tanning herself and listening to her iPod. Her parents are on a cruise for a few weeks so she’s enjoying the house to herself and her big sister Alina is studying abroad in Dublin, Ireland. Within the space of one voice message from her sister her entire world is thrown upside down. Alina is dead and her last call to Mac is a frantic and cryptic message that Mac decides to travel around the world to Ireland to find the answers to, including Alina’s killer. However, once Mac sets foot in Ireland she realizes that everything she thought she knew about herself is wrong and the only person providing any answers is a puzzle unto himself.

I have to say that I was bribed, begged and probably nearly beaten to read Darkfever. Ok, so I’m slightly exaggerating. Almost a year ago Jenn @ The Bawdy Book Blog and I made a pact: she would read one of my favorite series ever – Vampire Academy – and I would read hers – Fever. Well, she fulfilled her end of the bargain many months ago and I’ve been getting reminders ever since – I told her I was holding out until she came to beat me in person. :D But I was in between books and I eventually came to promise her I’d read at least Darkfever in my “free book month” this December and City of Bones just wasn’t seeming attractive to me for whatever odd reason and I decided to FINALLY, to her joy, read Darkfever.

All I can say is WHOA. As soon as Mac got that mysterious phone message from her sister I was hooked. Mac is such a girlie girl. It’s sort of fascinating to see her transformation (which I have a feeling will only continue to evolve as the series progresses), although sometimes her unwillingness to believe despite all evidence is annoying.

One of my favorite aspects of the book is learning about the two different sides of the Faery court – the Seelie (goodish) and Unseelie (baddies). I just started reading about the two sides in Paranormalcy, so it’s cool to learn more in Darkfever.

I think other than the mystery of who killed Alina and why, and of course the mysterious book – the Sinsar Dubh everyone is after, the back and forth between Mac and Barron is compelling. Although I have to admit that I have no idea why so many girls are in love with Barron at the moment. He seems so arrogant to me, but he did show a softness at the end of the book (which I won’t spoil for others who haven’t read it.) So maybe he’ll grow on me in time.

I read the first 120 pages in one night, not able to put it down. But except for the last 20 pages, the pages in between the ending and the mark where I left off (about 50-60 pages) was slow going for me. The ending wasn’t spectacular, but I’ve heard great things about the series and have been told the first book is the least best of the series and since the first part captured me so much – if the rest of the series is even better than that, I know I’m in for one heck of a ride.

I went straight to Bloodfever Book 2 in the Fever series. Yeah, I’m hooked, I’ve got the Fever!
